Nuclear Power Plants Stopped: Spain Declares State of Emergency Amid Blackout.

Spain Loses External Power Supply to Nuclear Power Plants
On April 28, 2025, Spain faced an unprecedented situation - the loss of external power supply to all seven nuclear power plants in the country. According to Energoatom of Ukraine, the shutdown affected the ASCO-1, ASCO-2, VANDELLOS-2, ALMARAZ-1, ALMARAZ-2, TRILLO, and COFRENTES power units.
The National Council for Nuclear Security of Spain confirmed that all power units were shut down in a normal manner, and emergency diesel generators were activated to support critical safety systems. Reactor cooling continues in a stable manner, and all nuclear safety requirements are being met, as reported by Energoatom.
This blackout is part of a larger power outage that also affected Portugal. The Spanish regulator quickly activated emergency protocols and notified international organizations.
Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant: A Danger to Nuclear Safety in Europe
Energoatom of Ukraine compares this situation to a much more dangerous situation at the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which has only two lines of communication with the power grid. During the occupation, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has already experienced eight complete disconnections from the grid, and the operation of the plant does not comply with established regulations due to the replacement of qualified Ukrainian personnel with incompetent workers.
'If the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant loses external power supply, there is a real threat of failure of safety systems, which poses a threat to the nuclear and radiation safety of all of Europe,' emphasizes the message from Energoatom.
