Fines, confiscation, and imprisonment: what awaits violators of fishing regulations.

Illegal fishing continues to pose a serious threat to the ecology and economy of Ukraine. Violations of fishing rules lead to the depletion of fish stocks, the destruction of the natural balance in water bodies, and cause millions of losses for the state. According to Ukrainian legislation, illegal extraction of aquatic bioresources entails administrative and criminal liability, as well as mandatory compensation for the damage caused. This was reported by 'Glavkom' referring to the State Fishing Agency.
Fees for illegal fishing
According to the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 1042 dated September 29, 2024, the following fines are established for one specimen of illegally caught fish: trout – 7225 UAH, catfish – 5117 UAH, carp – 3706 UAH, silver carp and white amur – 3638 UAH each, pikeperch – 3587 UAH, pike – 3468 UAH, crayfish – 3332 UAH, perch – 3162 UAH.
- violation of fishing rules – a fine of 34 to 170 UAH (part 3, article 85 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses);
- gross violations – a fine of 340 to 680 UAH with confiscation of gear and illegal catch (part 4, article 85 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses);
- for significant harm – a fine of 17,000 to 51,000 UAH or imprisonment for up to 3 years (article 249 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine);
- in case of using explosives, toxic substances, or electricity, as well as for repeated offenses – a fine of 51,000 to 85,000 UAH, restriction or deprivation of liberty for up to 3 years.
Experts urge citizens to adhere to fishing regulations and to care for the preservation of water resources.
In June of last year, 98 people died in the waters of Ukraine, including eight children, reported 'Glavkom' based on the information from the State Emergency Service.
