According to The Economist, American long-range missiles are returning to Europe, and their deployment in Germany is part of the resurgence of 'deep strike weapons'.
In 2019, Donald Trump withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. This caused outrage in most European countries, as Russia had violated the treaty that prohibited ground-based missiles with a range of 500 to 5500 km.
On July 10, the US and Germany announced that three American intermediate-range missiles will be deployed in Germany starting in 2026. This marks a turning point in Germany's security policy and strengthens Europe's interest in deep strike capabilities, especially after the war in Ukraine.
The main purpose of the new American long-range missiles is to deter Russia. If Russia attempts to attack European allies, American missiles will be able to respond accordingly. However, the Ukrainian military currently cannot use British Storm Shadow missiles for attacks on Russia.
